Songza is a free Internet music streaming service. It is available in the United States and Canada. It was originally launched in 2010.
Its functionality is similar to Pandora, but it does have one big distinction: Songza has a number of playlists created by experts that are offered to Songza users depending on their mood, time of day and activities. For example, a user can choose a playlist for walking, commuting, working out and so on. Users can vote for songs they like and don’t like. The service will adjust to a specific user’s musical tastes based on that.
Songza calls this functionality Concierge. In the beginning, the company tried a number of different features, such as allowing users to be DJ’s for their friends, but it was Concierge that allowed Songza to become really successful.
Here’s how Concierge feature works: when you visit Songza’s website, you’ll see a message. The message will tell you about what day it is, for example: “It’s Friday afternoon.” Then Songza will ask you about what kind of playlist you’d like to listen to. Examples are: Brand New Music, Focusing (No Lyrics), Having Fun at Work, Today’s Biggest Hits and so on. Once you decide on the kind of a playlist, you choose a category such as “Today’s Biggest Hits” and music starts playing.
Songza was acquired by Google in July of 2014. Over the past year and a half, Google has brought to Google Play a lot of features that made Songza popular. As of January 31, 2016, Songza will shut down and become a part of Google Play Music.
