The very first American Idol winner and famous pop star, Kelly Clarkson, is no stranger to record deals after working with 19 Records/RCA for more than a decade. But Clarkston is officially walking away from the label and joining Atlantic Records. The announcement was made via a Facebook Live video stream on June 24 after an assortment of clues leading fans to the big reveal. Clarkston’s bread crumbs were covers from artists such as Foreigner, Otis Redding, and Gnarls Barkley, who are all Atlantic artists. Clarkston says her major reason for the move is because Atlantic is the home to many soulful artists and this move gives her a reason to be excited for her new label. “They love every part of my personality as far as, like, all my colors, and I love the country side of me, and I love the Broadway side of me, and I love the pop side of me and the soulful side of me, and they are down to make really whatever record I’m into, which is real rare, so I’m super-excited about it.”
Kelly describes her former label as “kind of an arranged marriage,” though she admits to enjoying the work she did with them overall. Because of her American Idol win, Kelly was required to sign with RCA, so this move marks the first time she’s been able to choose her own label. As we were all hoping, with the new contract comes a new record, which Clarkson says will be heavily influenced by soul/R&B. “Everybody’s been asking me to make a soulful record for years, and while we’ve always had soulful influences on my records, we’ve never actually made a soulful record, so that is what Atlantic Records and I are about to do.”
The new album is slated for release in 2017 and Clarkston is hard at work. She has also announced the launching of KellyClarkstonLive.com, which will feature several new covers that will be available for immediate download –For Free!! What a way to advertise and a great way to get fans hyped! Way to go, Kelly!
